Multiplayer works Works as well as Windows - issues are apparently unrelated to Cedega (see below)

At least in cedega 5.1.3 when I join a LAN server my car runs 2-3 times faster then the same car in windows.

Works with Cedega version(s) 5.2.9 (best), 5.1.3, 5.0.3, 4.4.1, 4.3, 4.2.1, 4.2, 4.1.1, 4.1
Tested with Cedega version(s) 5.2.9, 5.1.3, 5.0.3, 4.4.1, 4.3, 4.2.1, 4.2, 4.1.1, 4.1

Demo Installation

  • Unzip demo exe file as a normal zip file.
  • With Cedega v4.1 or earlier: Edit AutoRun/autorun.cfg and change DirectXVersion=9.0c to DirectXVersion=9.0b.
  • Then install the demo. Demo installer crashes at the end of install.

Retail Installation

  • You must use "--use-dos-cwd" option (command line) or tick the "Run Directory" option (Point2Play) for the installer to work.
  • Don't use any spaces in your "program title", that could make NFSU2 not recognize the correct DirectX version.
  • When the install hangs (that will happen), you need to go to a console and use this command ps ax |grep -i "ereg". This will show you a process with it's PID and then you need to kill this process with kill -9 <pid>.
  • I just installed it using cedega 5.1.3 and it installed with default settings. I didn't have to do any of the above steps.

  • Demo has the same graphical issues as the first part - you can not safely enable car reflections or headlights.(Appears to be fixed in 4.3)
  • Demo runs great with default settings. Did not try Online, but it looked like it would have worked.
  • If you have problems, try adding /s to commandline, which might help.
  • Multiplayer via LAN works, but, i didn't manage to host a server, it just hangs on "Entering Lobby" when i tried to do so. Hosting individual races works.
  • A note on the multiplayer problem - my friends with windows also have hangs on entering lobby, maybe just the game engine doing it's worst?'
  • Ingame you can't change the level of detail, you'll need to do change some of the dword values in this file ~/.point2play/<gamename>/system.reg

Confirmed fix

MoRZiLLo posted a fix (which is confirmed by SWAT) that doesn't fix the crash on resolution change, but gives you an alternative way to set the resolution for this game.

If you try to change resolution ingame, it will surely crash.
No problem! The solution is here!

Open ~/.point2play/<gamename>/system.reg and search for "nfsu2" then look for the string:

"g_RacingResolution"=dword:00000000 (640x480)

Now you can change the resolution of the game by changing the last number for example:

"g_RacingResolution"=dword:00000001 (800x600)
"g_RacingResolution"=dword:00000002 (1024x768)
"g_RacingResolution"=dword:00000003 (1280x1024)
  • In 5.1.3 I could change resolutions on the fly without an issue. I never did the fixes outlined above.

Unconfirmed fix

This won't fix the crashes that happen when you try to change the resolution, or change the level of detail, but it is possible to do it ingame, simply by playing the game in desktop mode, it won't crash. Select your preferences and leave. After that, you can play in full screen, with your new preferences. This was only tested in cedega 5.0.3, so I'm not sure about other versions.
