Issues

Installation

  • The three demos install fine. The Gamers Hell 'gun boat' demo 'works' with Cedega 5.1, nVidia users will have to disable TwinView if they're using it as 5.1 likes to run on one screen displaying half the (in my case) 2560x1024 reolution. The demo's sound is OK, but the video output is blue, turning all video options down to Low gave some output, but the gun, bots and hapf the scenery was a flat blue, making this demo unplayable. TH may be an nVidia driver issue, however, ATi owners and later nVidia drivers ,ay resolve this issue. The other two demo's available from 3D Gamers are untested as of 25 - 02 - 2006.
  • The US and UK DVD retail versions now install without issues in Cedega 5.0.3. It is no longer necessary or advisable to use the loki installer.

Graphics

  • In spite of what the release notes say, the intro movies work flawlessly on my system, as well as the menu background movie. Tels 17:07, 5 Dec 2004 (CET)
  • With Cedega v4.1.1 and above, Far Cry might be very choppy, hitching/pausing every time a sound (footsteps, gun shot etc) is played. A fix for this is to renice the wineserver process a bit more. F.i. the Loki installer creates a script called farcry with the following line in it:
renice 5 -p `pgrep wineserver`
Change that to:
renice 11 -p `pgrep wineserver`

This is no longer necessary in 5.0.3, the choppiness has mostly been overcome. If the game is not run in too high a graphics configuaration gameplay is smooth and without major clipping issues.

  • Even with the patched Nvidia 6629 driver and Cedega v4.2 I am unable to enable water reflections/refractions, nor can I set the "shadow quality" higher than "medium". The first one causes the terrain to be invisible (think: floating in a shiny swamp), and the second one causes corrupted triangles. Tels 13:40, 10 Dec 2004 (CET)
  • Update - in windoze the OpenGL renderer has been broken since the 1.3 patch. this means that it will not render terrain properly if you have r_waterreflections set to 1. this is not a cedega issue, it's actually inherent in the game since they went fully dx9 and sm3.0 . running in directx removes this issue, but unfortunately introduces the issue with helicopters slowing down your fps unacceptably when they are on screen.

Again this issue is resolved by 5.0.3, it is possible to both enable r_waterreflections=1 (the terrain is now rendered) and DirectX (without the helicopters slowing down the frame rate).

  • Far Cry will now work 'out of the box' in DX mode, however, the game works better in OpenGL mode. To enable this, you will need to edit the system.cfg file in your Far Cry directory.
These options are needed:
r_Driver = "OpenGL"
r_TexResolution = "0"
i_direct_input = "0"
Then in your cedega config file, you need to set;
AGPVertexRAM="0"
(The cedega config file is located in ~/.transgaming/config or ~/.cedega/%Far Cry Folder%/config)

Again, the AGPVertexRAM setting is another addition that is no longer necesary post Cedega 5. themainliner 2006

Game play

  • Multiplayer works only if you start Far Cry without -devmode. You have to register with Ubi.com first (giving out a lot of details). The in-game registration might only work if you installed the Mozilla ActiveX control. Or register manually. After the registration you can login in the game and get the server/game list. If you always get messages like Server full or Kicked!, then you might need to enable punkbuster, and restart the game. If you get the message CD key already in usage after a restart, you have to wait a few minutes and try again. Multiplayer might crash the game.
  • After the transition from level one Training to level two Carrier, the game stops saving or loading games/checkpoints. See this post at the cedega forums for a workaround.

Miscellaneous

  • In earlier versions of Cedega copy protection would only work with winver=win2k. This is now not an issue, Fay Cry will run when winver is set to win98.
