  • Occasionally, on startup of a Source-engine based game, you may see a message that the Steam Registry is in use by another process. To avoid this message, you should exit Steam, wait a few minutes, and then retry. Running a non-Source-Engine based title from Steam, then exiting and retrying the Source-Engine based title may also help.
  • Currently, there is a bug in the nVidia 7 and 8 series drivers that causes textures to disappear and models to come up black in Source-based games. To get around this, when starting Day of Defeat: Source from Steam or from a shortcut, change the DirectX level to 8 or lower by giving the CLI parameter -dxlevel 80 or -dxlevel 70. nVidia is aware of the bug and it is their court right now. As you can see, in the last screenshot, it may still occur even with DX8, but it is quite constrained. Using DX7 completely eliminates the issue.
  • If you experience any slowdowns, switching to DirectX 8 gives some performance boosts and the graphics quality loss is very minimal.
  • When using DirectX 7 or 8, Day of Defeat: Source may not remember the resolution after exiting. You can set the resolution in the CLI in Steam or Cedega shortcut. I play at 1280x1024,so my parameters are -w 1280 -h 1024.
  • Playing in virtual destkop makes this game very unstable. Pressing the ESC key makes the game crash many times. Use Steam's window mode in the CLI to play in a window.
  • Starting the game from a shortcut created in Cedega and not through Steam may require multiple tries to get the game to start. Starting it through Steam works perfectly. It causes Steam to startup a couple of minutes after. You can stop and then try again. It's a matter of tweaking settings; mine isn't very frequent.

  • I net in approximately 40 FPS with DirectX 8. I got the same FPS with 9 as well. I will post my Delta soon.

  • So, as you can see above, the bug is quite nasty in DX9, but DX8, it isn't as frequent, but still there, and with DX7 it is completely gone. If you can ignore the bug, then by all means, play with DX9. However, if you compare DX7 screenshots to DX9 ones, you'll see that they aren't that different. Even with DX7, the quality is still there and it still looks pretty. This is coming from a person who used to game on Windows XP with everything turned up high, but I still like the way DX7 looks. The only thing that you may not like about DX7 is the objects are invisible until you come closer to them, like the trash can in the Omaha map.
  • Thanks to the Source engine that games played in DX7 on it even look good.
  • The recently released nVidia 9625 Beta drivers do remove the Source + Cedega bug. This is according to initial testing more screenshots to come soon.
